Today's image is one I had totally forgotten that I was able to get this past spring. I took it on my visit to the Lawrence Wetlands. This was the first time I had ever observed and, more importantly, been able to photograph a Beaver in the wild. It was swimming across a small waterway carrying material for the damn/home it was building. It was pretty cool to see.
This is how I usually see these birds, flying away from me, but I was rather pleased with it anyway. This is a Great Blue Heron and I was happy with the sharpness of it due to it being fairly close and showing more detail than I usually get as well. I took this shot at the Baker University Wetlands in Lawrence Kansas this past May.
It's November! Yikes the end of the year is coming fast. My photo for today goes back to the Baker Wetlands in Lawrence Kansas. This is an Egret I was able to capture as it surveyed it's surroundings. I think it is a Snowy Egret but not sure as it doesn't seem to have the fluffy plumage they have.
Today's image goes back to earlier this year and my visit to the Baker Wetlands in Lawrence. This is a Redwing Blackbird that was posing quite nicely for me.
This was my favorite photo that I was able to get during my trip to the Baker University Wetlands. I usually capture these birds fairly far away and flying away even further. I was able to capture this Great Blue Heron fairly close and as it caught and tried to eat a large fish. I stood and photographed it for a bit trying to get this fish down. I think it probably finally managed it but I had to leave before it did. It would put it down into the water and move it around in it's beak to get it in position to swallow it. Very interesting to watch.
Recently I went with friends to the Baker University Wetlands in south Lawrence Kansas. I was having a great day of photographing different birds there and we were starting to head back home when I saw this large bird flying towards where I was. I started to photograph it thinking it was a hawk of some kind but as it got closer I realized it was a Bald Eagle! I was quite surprised as I thought they left our area by early spring. It flew right overhead and I was able to get my best in flight shot ever. That wasn't even the high light of the day. That will be in a future post. 😉
I have had some great opportunities for capturing birds the last couple weeks of April into the beginning of May. On May 1 I was walking at the Baker University Wetlands in Lawrence Kansas where I had some very cool bird photography opportunities. This is another "Lifer" for me. These are White Faced Ibis that caused me and a friend to get some wet feet in order to get a view of them. I got lucky and got a fairly good photo out of it as well.
While I was in Lawrence at the Baker University Wetlands, I was able to see and photograph a new butterfly I had not seen before. This is a Zebra Swallowtail. It was similar to a Tiger but it is more white, and almost had a greenish tint to it with the black stripes. There were several of them around and they were quite neat to see.
