This is how I tend to see Herons. They are almost always flaying away from me. I got lucky that I was fairly close before we spotted each other. I took this at a good sized pond near where I live that I have seen some various ducks traveling through on.
At least you managed to get close. Did it give off a lot squawk when it took off?
