9/5/21

It's Steamy Sunday here on the Blog!  We are once again at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania in Strasburg.  Today's locomotive is once again Pennsylvania 4-4-0 1223, this time seen from the other side.  I provided some additional details on this locomotive lat week if you missed it. I really like how things were displayed in this museum.

  1. Again almost looks like a model😊
Both 1223 and the smaller one beside it have a grey front section compared to the black in front of the cab. What's under the "hood" of the grey part vs the black?

    1. Ironically, the "hood" is behind the silver part. The silver is part of the actual boiler. The black, shiny is a jacket around the boiler that insulation, used to be asbestos, now is ceramic fabric, is under. The silver part is what is called the smoke box of the boiler. Where the heat and smoke from the firebox after it goes through the flues goes up the stack.
More than you wanted to know probably.
