 It's Steamy Sunday here on the Blog!  Today's image is an oldie but a goodie.  I took this photo from down in the canyon by the Animas River looking up to the High Line of the Durango and Silverton Railroad as a train was heading back to Durango.  My favorite photographer, William Henry Jackson, photographed the D&SRR from a similar spot back in the early 1900s.

 It's Steamy Sunday here on the Blog!  Today's image is another nice ride to take in Colorado.  It is in Durango and called the Durango & Silverton.  The scenery on this ride is just gorgeous, most of it takes place alongside the Animas River.  My favorite photographer had photographed this railroad from the spot I was in.  This is my attempt to emulate the style of his photograph.  His photograph is below mine.

Today's image is another that was done to recreate an 1800s image taken by my favorite photographer of the old west, William Henry Jackson.  My photo is at a different angle because I didn't have the freedom he had to get off the train but was taken at about the same spot.  This is our train on the Durango & Silverton Railway headed back to Durango.  This shot is taken along the Animas River and Needle Mountain can be seen in the background.  I have included WHJ's image below mine for easy reference again.

Last Saturday and Sunday I was in Durango Colorado to photograph and ride the Durango & Silverton Railroad.  Those who follow my Blog will know that an influence on my photography comes from William Henry Jackson, who is most famous for being the one to photograph Yellowstone to help make it a National Park.  He also did a lot of Colorado railroad photography.  He has a rather well known image for those that follow his railroad work of the D&S on the High Line in the Animas River Canyon.  I attempted to re-create that shot on this trip.  I am not in the same exact place as that has been washed away I believe but I got fairly close.  I put a tone on it to make it even more similar.  I am also posting his image below mine for easy reference for those not familiar with the image.  It's a copy out of a book I have of his photography.

Today felt a bit more like winter, yesterday I was working outside which was weird for February.  My image for today is from the archives.  This is from a trip to Colorado and the Black Canyon of the Gunnison.  The canyon had some cool views and neat lines in the rock.  I thought it worked well as a B&W image especially because of it's name.  My favorite photographer, William Henry Jackson had photographed this area back in the day and it was neat to visit an area he had been.

If you have followed my blog for a while you may remember that my favorite photographer from the early days of photography is William Henry Jackson who's photographs of Yellowstone were instrumental in getting that made into a National Park.  He went on several Hayden Survey trips in Colorado and took photographs at various places, one of which made him rather famous, Mount of the Holy Cross.  When I was in Colorado at the Summit of Mount Evans I was able to view and photograph the Mount myself.  It even still had snow on it so I was rather excited to finally see it in person.  This is my homage to WHJ's photo.  You can see his original here:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_of_the_Holy_Cross#mediaviewer/File:Mountain_of_the_Holy_Cross,_Colorado_-_NARA_-_517691.jpg  which we were able to obtain an original copy of recently to add to our WHJ photograph collection.  You can read info about how he got the photo here:  http://www.nps.gov/history/history/online_books/knudsen/sec3l.htm

Last weekend I was in Colorado and New Mexico riding the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railway on a special train trip.  We got a treat as we were being headed by the oldest locomotive they have, a K-27 from 1903.  Another treat we got was being able to photograph the train as it came out of the tunnel.  I was able to get this image of it as it was entering the tunnel.  Bet you can guess what my next train image will be.  :-)  To bring out the rock texture in the tunnel I processed this with an HDR effect.  It gave it a look like William Henry Jackson's Lithographs which I quite liked.

Time for a railroad photo!  This is of the Cumbres & Toltec train on it's way back to Antonito, Colorado from Chama, New Mexico.  I decided to process it in a style reminiscent of my favorite photographer of all time, William Henry Jackson and liked the result.
