On a recent walk I captured a Red Shouldered Hawk in flight fairly close.

2/22/22

It's a double digit day and a day filled with 2s!  😀  I don't often get lucky with my bird shots but one day recently I did.  I was working in my office and turned around to get something and saw this guy sitting in the tree outside my window.  This is a Red Shouldered Hawk.  There were actually 2 of them but the other was lower down and behind a lot of branches.  They both sat there for quite some time allowing me to get several shots.  I liked how fluffy the wind made it look in this one.

Around our area I have been seeing a different type of hawk.  This is a Red Shouldered Hawk.  They are recognized by the markings on the chest, size and color of the tail and shape and color of the head.  I was able to capture this one being chased by a Kestrel.  Fun to see the much smaller bird giving the larger one such a hard time.

I have had a lot of opportunities to photograph Red Tail Hawks.  This past weekend this one flew right overhead at my house just as I got back from a walk where I had several opportunities to shoot them as well.  This one turned out really well with the light so this is the one I am sharing today.  😀

Recently while walking I had a Red Tail Hawk be very cooperative and photogenic.  This one was gliding around and actually came closer while doing so and passed right by me.  I was able to get this shot of it looking at me, well I am betting they are looking at the big "eye" of my camera.

2021 is quickly winding down to a close.  This past year I was able to get several decent hawk images.  This is one I was able to get in my own yard one morning.  This Red Shoulder Hawk came and sat on one of the bird feeder poles and then got spooked by my cat at the window and flew into our Sycamore tree.  I was able to capture this shot of it.  It's not one I see around often so I was happy to get such a close shot of one.

While out in my yard recently, I was able to capture a young Red Tailed Hawk in flight with some great light.  It was being harrassed by some crows and there were also some Turkey vultures around as well but I did not get them in the image.  The bar marks on the upper part of the wings near the lighter color are an indicator of the type of hawk.

I had to walk a few times recently due to having some rain. I have been treated to seeing several types of birds while walking including this Red Tail Hawk that was circling above me and giving me a good opportunity for a few shots of which this is one.  These hawks are distinguished in flight by their red tail but also because of the dark bars near the end of their wings where the feathers spread.

This is an image of a Red-tail hawk I got earlier this year while on a walk.  It has been nice to see them around.  Wish they would take care of the rabbits that are eating my flowers down to the ground in my yard.  😒  I learned you can tell for sure it is a Red-tail due to the bars on the wings.

This is another of the hawk images I have been able to get this winter.  I got this one one afternoon while on a walk.  It was just about to take off when I captured this shot.  This is a Red-tailed Hawk.

With my opportunities to take raptor pictures lately I am learning that some that I am seeing are not what I thought and I am seeing new birds which is cool.  This first shot is a new one I captured on a walk a last week.  I learned that from the wing pattern this is a Rough Legged Hawk, most likely a female due to the dark belly.  Rough Legged Hawks are over winter visitors that are in Kansas from October to April.  The second photo down is a recent one that I shared before in December for comparison of a Red Tail Hawk.  It is ID's by the light color wings with the prominent dark band.

This winter I have been able to view and capture at times a couple of Red tail Hawks that have been staying around a bit to the north of me while on my daily walk.  They have been perching on the tall power poles along the highway and then will fly and chase each other at times.  This was one of those times when it was flying by.  I think it was checking me out too.

After whining a couple weeks ago that I don't get a chance to capture birds in flight fairly close, I was presented with an opportunity while on an evening walk.  These 2 Red Tail Hawks were flying around each other and one flew fairly close overhead and I was able to get this image of it.

While walking this early winter I have seen several Red Tail Hawks in the area.  I believe one is the young one that sat on my railing one time.  I was able to get a good shot of this one in flight and though it was far off, I liked the light on it.

My image today isn't the best one ever but it was of an interesting visitor to my yard late this winter.  I was working at the dining room table and looked up and was quite surprised to see this bird hanging out in the tree.  All I had handy was my normal lens but I didn't want to miss getting a shot and it did fly off right after I snapped this image.  This is a Sharp Shin Hawk that was perched in the River Birch tree trying to prey on the little birds at the feeder.  I don't think it got any at this time.

This is an older image I was able to get out by Milford Lake.  Red-Tailed Hawks are hard to capture when sitting, they fly off quite quickly.  I was able to capture this one in a tree fairly un-obscured by branches so I was fairly happy with it.  I don't think it was too happy with me though.  😉

A scorcher of a day today.  42C or 107F.  UGH  Poor plants are really getting fried with being so behind on rain as well.  😟  My image today was taken a week or so ago as I was going to take some flower images and only had my macro lens with me.  This beautiful Red Tail Hawk was flying overhead and I liked how the light was really defining it's wings and tail.

This is an older image I took out near Milford Lake.  These birds are usually spotted sitting alongside the highway looking for a meal.  I spotted this one in a tree somewhat close so had to get a shot.  It really blends in well with the tree so very well camouflaged in general, I got lucky cause I saw it go into the tree.

So now we went straight to summer.  Close to 80 F today.  Wacky weather.  My image today is one I was able to capture a while back coming home from Milford Lake.  I thought the sky was boring with just the blue so this is a composite with another image of the moon in a blue sky.

A five day holiday from work, nice.  This is an older image I got while I was up near Milford Lake one day awhile back.  This Red Tail Hawk was flying overhead and I was able to capture a few shots of it.  In this one it looks like it was checking me out.
