Today's image is one that I took a while back of a bird I see fairly often all year. This is a Red Tail Hawk which are very common in my area of Kansas. They can be easily identified in flight by the short black band on the underside of the wing that you can see in the photo. When they are just sitting, they appear similar to a couple of other hawks, the Red Shoulder and the Sharp Shinned.
So this was another opportunity for a close up photo that I had of a hawk where I was not hurrying as much and it turned out much better than one I shared recently. This is a Red Tail Hawk which are more common to see for me. It was sitting in the Walnut tree in my backyard. It was so close I kept cutting off part of it's tail so had to adjust my Zoom lens to get it all in.
Today's image is of a Red Tail Hawk that was flying overhead one day while I was out on a walk. This image shows how you can identify one easily when they are in flight. The short bar on the outer part of each of the wings is the identifier. Red Tails are very difficult to ID when sitting as their markings can widely vary and make them look similar to other hawks like Red Shouldered.
The Red Tail Hawks seem to be more prominent now in my area. They are always around but it seems that when the Turkey Vultures are here, you don't see them as often. Red Tails are fairly easy to identify in flight because of the bar on their wings.
Today's image is another of the Red Tail Hawk images I was able to get recently. I really liked this one as it circled around in my direction.
I have had a lot of opportunities for bird images this winter. On the first weekend in March I was able to capture a Red Tail hawk fairly closely. It was gliding around on the winds we were having that day and I lucked out that it came towards me a couple of times. They are in our area all year but seem to be more prevalent in the winter.
Today's image is one that I was able to capture on the last bike ride of the season, last week most likely. This is a Red Tail Hawk that was flying above a pond that had a large number of ducks and geese on it. I am not sure if it was thinking it could get dinner or not. Red Tails are found in our area all year but become more prevalent as others come back from further north.
Today's image is an older one that I was able to get earlier this year, in late spring. It is a Red Tail Hawk that was flying above me. It shows the bars on the wings that help identify them pretty well.
Today's image is another I was able to capture when the Redwing Blackbirds were chasing the Redtail Hawk near Milford Lake. I am guessing the hawk got too close to their nest. Still very fun to see such a big bird being chased by a small one.
Recently while on a bike ride out by Milford Lake I saw this sight. There were two Redwing Blackbirds chasing a Red Hawk. I always have to laugh when such small birds are actually successful in chasing a big hawk away. I'm guessing it got too close to their nest.
Today's image is of a common bird in my area, a Red Tail Hawk. One of the ways to identify them are the short bars that extend down from the tops of their wings about a quarter way in from the tip. They can be well seen here as it was gliding above me.
One day, last weekend, I was working at my desk and looked out the window as I saw some movement. To my surprise, a Red Tail Hawk landed in the Walnut tree just outside the window. I quickly grabbed my camera which only had my 70mm lens on it and was able to grab this one shot before it flew off. I think it may have noticed me through the window.
Today's image is my first Red Tail Hawk capture for the new year. The light was pretty crappy, the sun was basically above it and it was very cloudy out. I had to play with it a lot to bring out detail and I think it turned out OK to share. 😊
This is an image of a Red Tail Hawk I was able to get while it was sitting in a tree looking for lunch one day this Spring while I was out on a ride.
It's a double digit day! 😀 Today's image is another of a Red Tail Hawk flying overhead. This summer, they have taken more of a backseat to the Mississippi Kites. I see more Kites around right now but I did see a Red Tail when riding my bike last weekend.
This is yet another capture I made of the Red Tail Hawk that was observing me while flying overhead. I had to get it while the getting was good. 😁
Today's image is one more of the images that I was able to capture of a Red Tailed Hawk soaring above me. I found it a cool experience because it was fairly close and was looking at me while I photographed it.
Today's image is another Red Tail Hawk one that I am pretty happy with. I captured it in flight and not only was it in focus but it was looking at me. I loved the way it had it's head positioned.
Today's image is how I often see Red Tail hawks. They are sitting on the utility poles and then fly off before i get a shot. The ones I have gotten when flying have been really lucky ones. This one was part luck and part readiness. I figured it would fly off and waited to catch a photo.
Today's image is one that I was quite happy with. On a recent bike ride I was able to capture several shots of a Red Tail hawk flying overhead. In a few of them it was looking at me and this is one of those.
