8/7/14

This is, I believe, a type of Hummingbird Moth.  I was able to capture it around my Budhelia or Butterfly bush one day.  I was happy to get it in focus.  :-)

8/6/14

This is a different type of Orchid than I am used to seeing.  Not sure what type it is but I thought it was rather pretty and somewhat dainty.  I saw it in the Butterfly Pavilion outside Denver.

8/5/14

This is a view of part of the Bristle-cone forest on Mount Evans.  I thought the fact that this section had so much dead trees in it that it reminded me of Mordor in Lord of the Rings.  Yes, I am a bit of a geek.  :-)   I processed it in B&W yo give it a more eerie feel.

8/4/14

I usually don't get to see these birds up close but there was a family of them that must have had a nest around the restaurant we went to last weekend.  This is mama and baby Killdeer with baby blending into it's surroundings quite well.  good protection for it though I think this family was fairly safe where they were.  Dad was just off to the right keeping an eye on things as well.

8/3/14

This is another view of our train that was pulled by Cumbres & Toltec locomotive 463 before it entered the Rock Tunnel on our Geology Train excursion.  It was a unique experience to be able to photograph the train in this way.  I processed this one in monochrome and really liked the timeless look of it.

8/2/14

I have not seen very many large butterflies this summer.  I have been able to see a pair of Tiger Swallowtails on 2 different days.  A few days ago I was able to capture the female of the pair feeding on a sunflower in my garden in the late afternoon sun from the west.

8/1/14

Wow, it's August already.  Time flies these days.  This is an image of this years bloom of our Barrel Cactus at work.  It usually blooms once a year and has 1 or 2 blooms.  2 years ago it put out 3 blooms and then last year didn't bloom at all.  I guess it had to rest from the show.  :-)  I photographed this years bloom against the window and I liked the blank background it gave it.  The flower is about 6 inches in length and the long tube part is hollow all the way down to the cactus body.
