Late this summer I was treated to several opportunities to capture White Lined Sphinx Moths in action.  They really love the Surprise Lilies and I can usually find one visiting them.  This one, however, was enjoying the Petunias I had in a hanging basket early one evening.

The last couple of evenings I have been able to see and capture a White-lined Sphinx moth visiting my Surprise Lilies.  They come at dusk and getting a photo is challenging as they move so fast and the light is not very good.  My phone does a really good job of capturing video of them though and I have a very short video of it HERE pollinating these flowers as it gets something to eat.

Today's image is one I was able to capture of a White-lined Sphinx Hummingbird Moth that was visiting my Petunias one early evening.  It was difficult to capture as the light was getting very low so I was pleased with how well this turned out.  I basically was shooting at a high speed and hoping for the best.  When I brightened up the photos I was happy to see I had gotten several in focus.  😅

Today's image is another from a visit from a large White Lined Sphinx Moth.  It was visiting my Surprise Lilies and I was able to get a few images of it of which this is one.  They are also known as Hummingbird Moths because their movements are very similar as is their size.

I finally was able to see an photograph a Sphinx Moth at my Surprise Lilies.  The Lilies have been blooming for several days and I have been checking in the evenings as that has been when I have seen them and was finally rewarded on Tuesday.  These moths are quite large and remind of Hummingbirds and are difficult to capture as they move around a lot.  I am always happy when I can get a decent capture of one.

Today's image is another summer one.  I was able to see and capture these guys several times this past year.  This is a White Lined Sphinx Hummingbird Moth that was enjoying the Marigolds in late summer.  I hope to see them around again this year. They are fun to watch as they hover around the flowers.

I was able to see Sphinx Moths fairly often this past year.  When I took this image one was visiting the fragrant blooms of my Surprise Lilies.

This year has been a good one for seeing White Lined Sphinx Hummingbird Moths.  On Tuesday when I got home from work, this one was feeding from the Marigolds and Zinnias in one garden and then moved on to another of my gardens.  I liked this image as it was a bit different due to the fact that it was facing me.  You can see it's very long probocis.  They are often mistaken for Hummingbirds because of their fairly large size and the fact that they hover at flowers in the same way.

It's Friday, TGIF!  This a picture from this past spring of a Sphinx Moth enjoying the Lilacs back when we used to get rain.  Sigh.  Anyway, I chose this image for today due to it's bokeh because Friday's Are Bokehlicious!

My Surprise Lilies really surprised me this year.  About 3 of them came up and I thought that would be it.  We had a rain about a week and a half ago and a whole bunch more popped up.  The Sphinx Moths were really enjoying them and were quickly flitting about and dipping inside for some nectar.  It was fairly difficult to capture one but I managed a few good shots.

Last week I was about to go outside and I saw this Sphinx Moth flying around my Day Lilies.  I ran inside to get my camera and was lucky enough that it was still there and I was able to capture some photos of it.  I usually don't see them around when it's so sunny out.

TGIF, it's Friday!  It's been a week.  I have seen several of these this Spring.  This is a White Lined Sphinx or Hummingbird Moth.  This is probably a once in a lifetime shot if you pay attention to the water drops and where they are coming from.  😉  It was feeding off the Lilacs.  This image had some nice bokeh as well, so, of course, I had to share it for today because Friday's Are Bokehlicious!

Hummingbird type moths are very cool I think.  I was able to capture this White Lined Sphinx Moth around some Petunias one evening.  Those are their favorite flowers and the time of day you will usually find them.

I captured this White-lined Sphinx Hummingbird Moth enjoying a Thistle flower a while back.  They are also known as just a Hummingbird Moth.  They are pretty elusive and I don't see them often so it was great to be able to get a photo of one.  I found out something interesting about Hummingbird moths, their caterpillar stage are Hornworms.  One variety is the Tobacco Hornworm that destroys tomato plants if left alone.
