It's Wildflower Wednesday here on the Blog! Today's flower is one that usually can only be seen if you are a morning person. This is Western Salsify or Goat's Beard. The flowers close up by around noon on a sunny day. After the flowers fade they get a head on them like a giant Dandelion. The name Goat's Beard refers to the bristly top of each achene or seed head.
Guess I never clued into their closing at noon hour. I do tend to see them when out photographing which I do in the early morning. I think when I have seen them closed in the afternoon I just assumed they were finished blooming and working on seed production - never noticing the lack of any flowers in bloom.
