 It's Steamy Sunday here on the Blog on this last day of April!  Today's image once again goes into the archives and back to when we were treated to a steam train coming through our town.  This is Union Pacific locomotive 844 passing under the bridge which has currently been demolished to be replaced.  844 is a Northern type or 4-8-4.  It is the only steam locomotive to have never been retired.  UP immediately put it into excursion trip use after the UP stopped using steam on it's lines.

 It's Steamy Sunday here on the Blog!  Today's image is of Union Pacific locomotive 844 as it left my town in Kansas several years back on one of it's excursions.  It's always fun to have a steam train pass through town.  844 is a Northern type locomotive meaning it has a 4-8-4 wheel arrangement.  It was delivered to the UP in 1944 and was never retired.

 It's Steamy Sunday here on the Blog!  I am going to be dipping back into my archives for some of my favorite railroading experiences for a while.  I'm starting with one from several years ago where Union Pacific was running an excursion with "Living Legend" locomotive 844 through my town in Kansas.  844 was built in 1944 and was the last steam locomotive built for the UP and has never been retired.  It went from freight duty straight into excursion runs.  It is a Northern class or 4-8-4 wheel arrangement locomotive.  I captured it here from a bridge that doesn't exist any longer as it is currently undergoing replacement as it headed out of town towards Topeka.

I really dug back in the archives for this one.  I took this shot with my old Sony camera that I miss some days because I didn't have to change lenses all the time.  Anyone who follows me knows I love trains and trains are what I share on Sundays most of the time.  I will travel long distances just to see a steam train and hopefully ride behind it as well.  Sometimes I get lucky and they come to me.  This was from back in 2006 when the Union Pacific was running a special train back to Cheyenne through my town in Kansas.  I captured it as it was heading out of town and about to enter Fort Riley.

So we are warming back up into the high 60s and 70s again.  Crazy weather.  My image today is one more from seeing Union Pacific's locomotive 844 travel through Topeka, KS.  This is a wider shot as it left the city and you can see a bit of Union Station behind and also some of the large number of people who came out to see this beautiful engine as it traveled back home to Cheyenne, Wyoming.  It's a sight to see and hear, it has a beautiful deep whistle that can be heard quite some distance.  It made my eardrums vibrate as it passed under the bridge and blew it.  :-)

I hope everyone in the US remembered to turn your clocks back and enjoy your extra hour today.  My image today is one I got last weekend as Union Pacific locomotive 844 headed out of Topeka, KS.  I was shooting into the sun even though there were clouds in the sky and this image lent itself well to a B&W conversion I thought.

So yesterday I was near Topeka playing trains.  The Union Pacific 844 was heading back through the area from it's first main outing after a major overhaul and boiler re-do.  It had made a trip to Tennessee and was on it's way back home to Cheyenne, Wyoming and it had a short enough train it did not have a diesel assist with it so it was great to catch it like this.  I was told it usually has the diesel to assist in breaking not for any pulling power, with the shorter train the steam power could handle it alone.  I caught the train on Highway 24 just outside the city as it headed in to Union Station.
