This is a Viceroy butterfly I was able to capture on the Butterfly bush a week or so ago. This shows very well how you can tell it's a Viceroy, they have those bands that go horizontally across those inside rear wings where Monarchs don't have that. Monarchs also have more spots along the black part and not the white curves.

Posting a bit early today as I am on vacation and I can. :-)
This is a bit older shot of a Dicksissel I saw out on Konza Prairie that seemed about as interested in me as I was in it the way it's looking at me here. Actually posed for quite a bit so I could get this shot of it.

I have seen several young Praying Mantis this year. I think this guy was the smallest so far. Found him or her hanging out on a leaf on my Butterfly Bush one day and he/she posed long enough for a nice photo.

Who knew my county had a waterfall. We have lived here for 25 years and just recently found out about it. In my defense though it only runs in the spring and with the drought the last few years wouldn't have run at all. It was running now though because of all the rain we had been getting. It's at least a 30 foot drop and was quite lovely the evening we were there. Since this was shot in the evening and the light was somewhat dull I used an HDR effect on it to bring some details out.

I don't share many Black and White shots but I was really pleased with how this one turned out. I had to do quite a lot of work to it to get the mountains to stand out because it was taken on a very cloudy and hazy day. This is a shot of the Grand Teton Mountains in the National Park of the same name. This was a view I had as we traveled through part of the park on our way up to Yellowstone.

I thought it was fitting that I ended the old site with my favorite subject matter, trains! This is an image of Cumbres & Toltec locomotive 487 taking on water at Cumbres Pass after helping to double head up to the pass. It will be on its way back to Chama, New Mexico while the rest of the train heads on to Antonito, Colorado.
