It's Wildflower Wednesday here on the Blog! Today's flower is one I find very photogenic. This is the American Elderberry bloom. Each flower will produce an Elderberry. They can grow to 10 feet tall and I have seen them that tall out at Konza Prairie. They usually bloom May through July and they are found in the Honeysuckle family. The berries, if you can get them before the birds, are a very good source of Vitamin C.

The plant will generally only live 3 to 5 years but it is constantly producing new plants from it's roots.

The plants generally only live 3 to 5 years but new ones continue to come up from the rootstock.

Love the buds when they look like little balls before they open to create a large fluffy flower. They bloom May through July and are in the Honeysuckle family. They are a good source of vitamin C and can be eaten raw but are much better in jellies or even wine. The plant generally only lives about 3 to 5 years but new plants continue to emerge from the roots.
Happy first day of September! Time is flying. It's also another Wildflower Wednesday here on the Blog. Today's flower is one from late this spring and a favorite to photograph. This is Eldeberry. I love the lacy texture to the flowers. I never get to do anything with them because the birds get them all but that's OK. I remember my mom making some pretty good jelly with them back in the day though.
