2/28/14

So it's the last day of February and spring should be on the way with Crocus flowers like these.  Instead this weekend has predictions of a winter snow storm and temps around zero.  This is getting old.  Speaking of old, this is an older shot from this past spring of Crocus in my yard after the late snow we had.

More winter weather coming so dreaming of summer and butterflies.  This is a Monarch, one of the few I saw this year, on the Butterfly Bush or Buddelja.  Hope more come around this year but their migration is endangered.  I intend to plant more things that will attract and help them like milkweed.

This is the Upper Falls of the Yellowstone from our trip to Yellowstone national park this past July.  The water was flowing very strong.  You can see people off to the right hand side on an overlook if you enlarge the photo which we went to as well where you can get quite close to the falls.

This is a photo from this past June.  I took this at the Bi-Plane Fly-In that's held here now in Junction City every summer.  I wasn't sure what the exact make of this plane is the the tag behind the propeller and engine said that it is Wright Engine which is appropriate as the first flight was made in a Bi-plane by the Wright Brothers.  I played with it a bit in Photoshop as well to make the plane itself stand out better.

An older image of a male cardinal sitting in the Walnut tree looking rather intense.  Winter is back today for the most part, cold temps again.

2/23/14

An older image of a train for today.  This is the Leviathan on display at Owosso, Michigan during Steamfest back in 2009.  The Leviathan is a current day engine but built to look and work like an old 1800's locomotive.  It was quite beautiful and very neat to see in person.

2/22/14

This is a composite photo.  I don't do many of these but sometimes I like to play and this one turned out fairly well so decided to share.  On a walk this week I took some shots of the weird cloud formations that were the forefront of our wacky weather.  Then on the way back I got the best Red Tail hawk in flight shot I have ever gotten but it was against a plain dreary sky.  I decided to put the two together and this is the result.

2/21/14

I received beautiful roses for Valentine's Day.  I took them outside and photographed them against the snow.  I liked this image because of the shadow they were casting.

2/20/14

We had wacky weather today.  Rain and thunderstorms to sleet and thunder and then almost a blizzard and thunder.  Now it's sunny and you can't even tell it ever did anything today but rain.  This is an image from this summer of a Buckeye butterfly on the Butterfly Bush or Buddelia.

2/19/14

This is an image from this past summer from our trip to Yellowstone.  This was taken at Artist's Point and is a long exposure.  I also put an HDR effect to bring out details in the valley area.  The waterfall itself, which is the Lower Yellowstone Falls turned out a bit too milky but I still like the overall image so sharing it today.

2/18/14

It was a lot like spring today!  Very nice and warm.  I miss that!  We'll be back to cold in the next couple of days.  In the meantime, a spring time picture to remind it's coming fairly soon!  :-)

2/17/14

This is a little Yellow Rumped Warbler that I was able to capture while it was getting a drink from the bird bath.  I thought it was cute the way it would raise it's head way up to swallow the water.  I took this mainly for the reflection originally.

2/16/14

This is an image from our trip to Yellowstone this past summer.  This is Grand geyser which wasn't horribly "grand" at the time because we didn't get to witness a full eruption.  It was quite active though as you can see in this image.  There is a slight HDR effect to bring out some details but yet keep it natural looking.

2/15/14

This is an older photo from late last April when we had a snow after the flowers had begun blooming.  I had shared a yellow one like this before.  This is a red one that I liked the texture of the snow appearance.  As always, you can always view larger by clicking on the image.

2/14/14

Happy Valentine's Day to all who celebrate!  This is a rose from my garden that I photographed late this summer.  I put a bit of a glow effect on it and liked the results.

2/13/14

Something a bit whimsical today.  This is a Pondhawk Dragonfly with some water droplets behind on the grass to create a rather sparkly bokeh.

2/12/14

This is a long exposure image I did of one of the waterfalls at the Overland Park Arboretum in Kansas that I never shared.  I took this photo this past spring.  The Arboretum is a beautiful place and I hope to get back there again sometime.

2/11/14

This was an experiment with my new macro lens to see how it did.  I was rather impressed with the clarity I got out of this Geranium macro.

2/10/14

This photo may be my most popular one on Google + yet.  This one I can understand why though, I thought it was really cute as I was taking it.  A female Cardinal resting on the railing in between trips to the bird feeder behind it to the right last Tuesday. We had quite the snow that day.

2/9/14

Time for a railroad photo!  This is of the Cumbres & Toltec train on it's way back to Antonito, Colorado from Chama, New Mexico.  I decided to process it in a style reminiscent of my favorite photographer of all time, William Henry Jackson and liked the result.

2/8/14

Well, let's try this again.  The first picture I had already shared.  Posting late today because we were out of town.  This is a Swallowtail Butterfly on Thistle that I was able to photograph this summer while on a walk.

2/7/14

This is a photo I took out on Konza Prairie of a couple of Nipple Cactus in bloom.  They remind me of little fireworks.  Anyway, a burst of color for a dreary day outside today.

2/6/14

It's white outside so I'm in need of a bit of color.  This is from this past fall.  Some 5 Leaf ivy with some pastel color.

2/5/14

Our winter storm dumped 11 inches on us yesterday for a total of 25 for the year.  Ick, I am not fond of snow or winter in general.  It's very cold out today so that did make for very lovely ice patterns on my storm door this morning that reminded me of feathers.

2/4/14

We are off school due to a fairly significant snow fall, for us anyway.  It's snowed at least 4 inches so far and still coming down I would guess.  This is from a more pretty snow we had in late April this past year.  Snow on a Redbud tree in front of an old country school house.

2/3/14

So a snowstorm on the way supposedly.  They even already canceled school.  Will be interesting to see what we get.  I wish it was not much because I am sick of snow and winter but we shall see.  In the meantime, here is a female Cardinal that I photographed in the tree outside my window last winter.  It almost looks like it has a third eye, I believe it is a water drop from melting snow.  :-)

2/2/14

Time for a railroad image!  This is the locomotive I get to work on in Rollag, Minnesota.  It's the 353, a former Soo Line switch engine and I get a 2hr shift each day to fire it during the Steam thresher's Reunion that they hold there each Labor Day weekend.  I decided to give it a B&W treatment and quite liked the results.

2/1/14

It's a white landscape outside again, about 4 inches of snow overnight.  Looking forward to sight of tulips coming up and warmer days of color.
